Today we spent time in Port au Prince then flew north to Cap Haitien. We visited Bernard Mevs Hospital where seriously ill children and infants are treated. Until recently the hospital did not have a central water system. Now it does because of our partnership with Food for the Poor.
In Cap Haitien we went to a local prison and through the efforts of Episcopal Bishop Oge Beauvoir freed nine prisoners who had gone to jail for petty crimes with terms of two months to a year. The youngest were 14 and 16. The 14 year old had been in jail for 4 months. His crime? He had stolen an iPod. It is clear the Haitian prison system and the judiciary are in serious need of reform.
